Celebrating Construction Career Days!

In case you missed it, the spectacular Construction Career Days event from the Florida Department of Transportation just took place! This is an amazing event that fosters career development for high school students all over Florida, and we wanted to talk about it because of how exciting it is for our industry! Young men and women in Jacksonville and other parts of the state get to learn about the road and bridge construction industry, so they see what kinds of jobs they could work toward after graduating. Educational Event

The young, ambitious mind is a beautiful thing, and there’s no better way to cultivate it then by showing students the details of the industry. At Construction Career Days, contributors held learning labs to that were implemented into a day’s curriculum for these students, which gave over two thousand juniors and seniors the opportunity to get some hands-on learning. Areas like bridge repair, equipment operation, pole climbing, and geotechnical exploration were all covered in the learning labs, allowing these eager high-schoolers a chance to explore the many different opportunities they could find in the construction field. Students then attended classes in a career center. This brief event taught them about the process of getting a job in the construction industry, something that provided each student with practical information for any occupation they choose to pursue. Overall, the day was a great success for these young adults’ educational and occupational goals.

Scholarship Opportunities

Not only did students learn from the events at Construction Career Days, but many of them even earned scholarships! A total of 6 kids earned scholarships for colleges and vocational schools. These scholarships are handed out every year, and it’s just another great way to inspire our youth to pursue their dreams. We’re confident this extra push toward individual success will benefit the lives of each and every student, as well as the surrounding Florida community.

The Future for Students

As you’ve probably noticed around you, the construction field is booming. Florida was hurt worse than most other states by the Great Recession, but since then, we’ve had a serious rebound in the job market.
