Inspection Guide for Renting an Excavator
Renting an excavator can be the financially appropriate alternative to buying one for some people. This can be especially true if you only need it for one or two projects, or if buying one is simply out of your budget right now. But renting isn’t necessarily the easier alternative to buying. There are still important steps you need to take to ensure you’re getting your money’s worth. When you start settling on a particular model, you’ll want to perform a thorough inspection, even if you’re getting it from a reputable leaser like Synergy Equipment.
Check out the inspection guide we’ve provided and then stop by one of our many locations throughout Florida and Georgia and we’ll help you find the right excavator rental for you. We also serve those in South Carolina.
Why an Inspection?
You might have heard at this point that you need to perform an inspection, but you may not have been told why. Of course, you’ll want to look for signs that the machine will give you more trouble than productivity. Any sign that the excavator won’t work properly or could break down should be a red flag, and should steer you to another model.
The other purpose when it comes to rentals is to protect you from any damages that may have come with the machine. A scratch here and there is certainly no reason to walk away from a rental, but you don’t want to get charged for it when returning the machine. Take note, and pictures, of every issue you see and hang onto that list. It’ll be the evidence you need if the leaser asks about damage you didn’t cause.
Frame
Now for the actual inspection. Let’s start big and work our way down. Inspect every inch of the frame from top to bottom. Look at the amount of wear on the machine and take note of any signs that part of it seems uneven. This could mean there’s a structural issue causing the frame to tilt. Also note cracks, scratches, and dents, no matter how little they may be.
Hydraulic Arm
The excavator arm not only holds a lot of your power, it’s the defining feature you need to be productive with the machine. Because of this, the arm is going to need extra attention. Inspect the structural integrity and also the hydraulic system. Even test it out, if possible. Sometimes a machine that looks fine can still hide secrets that you don’t want to find out about at the worksite. Also check the cylinders and even the attachment that comes with the rental.
Tires
They’re the foundation of the excavator and their condition will play a big role in how well it performs. Ask how old the tires are and check for signs of damage and excessive wear. Also find out the recommended psi levels for the tires and check to see if they’re properly inflated.
Engine
The power source of the excavator has a lot of moving parts, but do your best to look for anything that might be noteworthy. Check fluid levels and conditions, including oil and coolant. Check all filters and look for leaks in the hoses. Inspect the radiators for bent fins and anything else that seems like it needs to be noted, both for your sake and so the leaser can address it right away.
There are lots of other important inspection points, but if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking at, consider bringing along a colleague or friend with more experience. You can also hire a professional to perform their own inspection. And one great way to know you’re starting on the right foot with excellent products and great service is to go to a reputable dealer, like Synergy Equipment.
