How to Stay Cool While Farming in the Summer
Whether you’re looking to convert a few acres of your property into a profitable growing operation or simply grow enough vegetables for your family, summer farming can be fun and rewarding. However, going out and working in your field or yard under the scorching sun can be a bit challenging. If you’re not careful, you could develop heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, and both can do serious damage to your body. Fortunately, you can beat the heat and stay cool while farming in the summer with just a few simple tricks. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is key to preventing heatstroke when you’re farming during the summer months. Make sure that you have a container of water nearby at all times and it should be easy for you to refill it. At the very least, you should be drinking 8 to 10 cups of water a day. Along with lost water due to sweat, our bodies lose a lot of important chemicals too, like salt and electrolytes. Eat some snacks or a sports drink that provides vitamins and minerals in addition to replacing some of the salt.
Dress for the Weather
There are a number of ways to make sure you’re staying cool and being safe on your farm. For starters, it helps if you’re dressed for the part. It might be extremely hot, but that doesn’t mean you should go out in minimal clothing. It’s still important to wear long sleeves and pants so you’re protected from the sun. Choosing breathable fabric like cotton or linen helps combat overheating. Finally, along with the heat comes UV radiation that can be quite harmful, so don’t forget a bit of sunscreen for exposed skin.
Stay Away from Extreme Heat
Drinking fluids and dressing appropriately can do a lot to keep you cool, but you should try to avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme heat. Plan your day in such a way that you take a break during the hottest part of the day, which usually happens between 2 and 4:00 pm. Take advantage of the early morning and late evening to complete most of your tasks when the weather is much cooler.
